Competition and Conflicts among Multiple Users of Tank Irrigation Systems

Social interactions among multiple user groups of tank irrigation systems were studied to propose policies for sustainable management of tanks. Crop growers are the major competitors for water besides encroachers, fish and duck farmers. Existence of week property rights remained as the reason for the competition among users that subsequently led to conflicts. Conflicts aroused among user groups during water scarcity conditions and were settled by the community leaders and water users association (WUA). It is suggested that WUA must play major role in promoting the collective actions among user groups to use the tank resources sustainably.
